RFID Installation: What to Check Before a Site Visit
Prepare material flow, infrastructure, and acceptance criteria before installing a reading point.
Map the process
Describe what moves through the reading area, how it is tagged, and what should trigger a transaction. Identify nearby stock, reverse movement, staging, and exceptions. Include photos or diagrams through an agreed project channel when they can be shared appropriately.
Review the physical site
Document mounting locations, access, power, network connectivity, cabling routes, and environmental constraints. Facilities and IT should review the plan with the deployment team. Do not finalize equipment placement from a floor plan alone when operating conditions are uncertain.
Prepare software and test material
Confirm identifier mappings, destination interfaces, and access arrangements. Assemble representative tagged items and a trusted expected list. Include difficult cases and the normal range of movement so commissioning exercises the complete workflow.
Agree on handoff evidence
Define acceptance criteria, configuration records, operator guidance, and support ownership. Test recovery and exception visibility as well as successful reads. The installation is useful when the operating team can understand and maintain the resulting workflow.
Record dependencies before arrival
Identify who provides power, network access, mounting approval, sample items, application access, and a safe test window. Agree which configurations will be recorded and how changes will be authorized. A site can be physically ready while the interface or business process is not; track those dependencies separately.
Commission more than the normal path
Test a complete transaction, an unexpected item, an unread identifier, a disconnected interface, and recovery after interruption. Record the configuration used and the expected result for each exercise. Handover should identify remaining exceptions, operating instructions, and support ownership so that a later issue can be reproduced and investigated.
Carry evidence through commissioning
- Survey: document movement, mounting access, and available power and network connections.
- Configure: record the approved reader settings, identifiers, and application rules.
- Test: run normal work and agreed exception cases; retain observations and outcomes.
- Handover: deliver configuration records, acceptance results, recovery instructions, and named operational owners.
